Silver purity is commonly expressed in parts per thousand. Terms such as sterling describe represented content under applicable standards, not a universal authenticity guarantee.

Definitions

Silver fineness
The represented proportion of silver expressed in parts per thousand.
Sterling silver
A term commonly associated with silver represented as at least 925 parts per thousand under relevant guidance.
Silver-plated
An item with a silver surface over a different base material rather than solid silver throughout.

Purity terms and marks

Fineness marks can help identify represented silver content. Plated, filled, and solid items should not be treated as equivalent.

Interpret marks with the applicable jurisdiction and item construction in mind.

Build a reliable inventory

Record the item, stated fineness, actual weight, unit, non-silver components, and any uncertainty. Testing may be necessary when value depends on composition.

Avoid assigning purity from appearance or tarnish alone.

When silver purity is relevant to Zakat

Purity can affect the external price chosen for owned silver. It does not change the shared engine’s configured Nisab profiles.

Record price source and date, and use qualified guidance when asset treatment is uncertain.

Practical examples

Solid and plated are different

A plated serving item is not entered as though its full weight were fine silver merely because its surface appears silver.

  • Treating silver plate as solid silver.
  • Assuming every 925 mark is authentic.
