Calculator Methodology
How the calculators turn user-provided information into estimates, and where independent judgment remains necessary.
Introduction
This page explains the arithmetic, inputs, and assumptions behind the site's calculators.
Educational purpose
The tools provide estimates based on the information and assumptions selected by the user. They do not replace personal religious guidance or individualized legal, tax, or financial advice.
How calculations are produced
The calculator applies the displayed arithmetic to the values entered in the browser. Arithmetic results are distinct from the user's factual assumptions and from any religious interpretation relevant to the user.
User-provided inputs
Users are responsible for entering applicable assets, liabilities, prices, and other requested amounts accurately. The site does not independently verify ownership, eligibility, valuation, or completeness.
Zakat rate
Where shown, the calculator applies its existing 2.5% arithmetic rate to qualifying wealth. Whether that rate and asset treatment apply to a particular situation may require separate guidance.
Nisab bases and profiles
The calculators support gold, silver, and manual monetary Nisab bases.
Commonly used calculation profiles include gold thresholds of 85g and 87.48g and silver thresholds of 595g and 612.36g.
A manual monetary threshold is also supported. The calculator uses the amount entered without converting it; use one consistent currency and choose the threshold appropriate to the method you follow.
The tool does not validate whether a selected profile or manual threshold is appropriate for an individual religious situation.
Gold and silver price handling
Metal prices are entered by the user. The site does not retrieve live prices, automatically update prices, or supply fallback values.
Users should check the price, per-gram unit, purity represented by that price, and relevant valuation time.
Hawl and ownership-period assumptions
The calculator records Hawl as completed, not completed, or not sure and uses that selection in the estimate. It does not decide whether Hawl applies to a particular asset or person.
A “not sure” selection remains unconfirmed; it is not automatically treated as completed or not completed. Appropriate qualified guidance may be useful for personal application.
Deductible liabilities and net wealth
Enter the amount you treat as deductible liabilities under the method you follow. The calculator subtracts the amount entered, floors net wealth at zero, and does not determine which debts, installments, expenses, or obligations qualify.
Net wealth is calculated as the greater of gross assets minus entered deductible liabilities or zero.
Currency handling
The selected currency is a display label only. The calculator performs no exchange-rate conversion, so all monetary inputs must use one consistent currency.
Estimates and rounding
Threshold comparison uses full calculation precision before values are rounded for display. Displayed monetary results may be rounded for readability.
Results are estimates based on the values, profile, Hawl status, and other assumptions entered. Threshold and Hawl statuses are not individualized religious determinations.
Differences in interpretation
Legitimate differences may affect which assets, liabilities, thresholds, or timing rules apply. The site does not rank schools of thought or present one interpretation as universally binding.
What the calculator does not determine
It does not issue a fatwa, determine personal religious obligation, classify every asset, verify beneficiaries, resolve disputes, or determine legal, tax, or regulatory consequences.
When additional advice may be appropriate
Professional or scholarly guidance may be useful for business assets, inheritance, mixed ownership, debt, jurisdiction-specific requirements, disputed classifications, or any circumstance not represented by the tool.
Revision and review process
Methodology wording is reviewed when calculator behavior or supporting explanations change. Potential errors can be reported through the contact page and are handled under the corrections policy.
