Precious metals may be quoted in metric or trade units. A correct valuation requires the owned weight and price to use compatible units.

Definitions

Gram
An SI-derived metric unit of mass commonly used for jewellery and smaller metal quantities.
Troy ounce
A trade unit used in precious-metals markets; it differs from the avoirdupois ounce used for many everyday goods.
Tola
A traditional unit whose practical use and local convention should be identified rather than assumed.

Keep units compatible

A per-gram price must be multiplied by grams, not by an unconverted troy-ounce figure. Record both the original unit and any conversion.

Do not mix a unit conversion with a purity adjustment; they answer different questions.

Practical weighing notes

Use a suitable scale and record whether stones or other materials are included in the measured weight. Commercial documents may use their own precision and rounding.

For high-value or uncertain items, professional measurement can reduce avoidable input errors.

When units are relevant to Zakat

The metal calculators use grams, so other units must be converted transparently before entry. Existing weight converters can support arithmetic but cannot verify the item.

Practical examples

Match the denominator

If an external quote is per gram, first express owned metal in grams. Retain the original weight and conversion note for review.

Common mistakes

  • Using an ordinary ounce as though it were a troy ounce.
  • Mixing grams with a per-ounce price.
  • Ignoring non-metal components in total item weight.
