Direct answer
Monthly payments may be used as advance Zakat under approaches that permit advance payment, but the year-end obligation should still be reviewed against actual eligible wealth, Nisab, Hawl, prior payments, and the guidance you follow.
Monthly payments are usually an advance-payment question
Dividing an estimate into monthly amounts can make budgeting easier, but it does not replace the need to identify when Zakat becomes due. An early payment should be recorded clearly as intended Zakat rather than an ordinary donation.
At the chosen annual review, calculate using actual values and assumptions. Compare the reviewed amount with advances already paid, then address any shortfall or overpayment according to qualified guidance.
Keep the annual calculation visible
Record each payment date, amount, recipient, and intention. Keep those records beside the valuation date, included assets, selected Nisab basis, Hawl treatment, and allowed liabilities.
A monthly amount based only on expected salary can drift away from the actual year-end position. Changes in savings, investments, metals, debts, or ownership may materially change the estimate.
Important conditions
- Confirm that advance payment is accepted under the guidance you follow.
- Ensure recipients are eligible when each payment is made.
- Reconcile advances against an actual calculation on the relevant due date.
Practical example
A person estimates an annual amount, pays one-twelfth monthly with a clear Zakat intention, and performs a full review on the established date. If the reviewed estimate is higher, the person considers the unpaid balance promptly.
Differences of opinion
Scholars may differ about advance payment, how far in advance it may occur, and treatment of an excess payment. Monthly budgeting should not be described as one universal method.
When to consult a scholar
Ask a qualified scholar to review the facts when timing, ownership, family support duties, debt, inheritance, restricted assets, or the methodology you follow makes the answer uncertain.
