Zakat on Salary

A salary figure alone does not establish a Zakat amount. The central practical question is often what eligible wealth remains owned and how Nisab and Hawl are applied under the selected methodology.

Income and retained savings

Salary may be received and spent, or part may remain as cash and other assets. An educational calculator focuses on the included amounts actually retained.

Avoid applying a rate mechanically to gross annual income without identifying the methodology.

Timing and Hawl

People may track individual acquisition dates or use an annual review date under guidance they follow.

The calculator records a Hawl selection but does not decide how the period applies to each deposit.

Liabilities and records

Only include liabilities allowed by the methodology being followed, and keep them distinct from future lifestyle expenses.

Statements, valuation dates, and calculation assumptions make the estimate easier to review.

Practical examples

Annual review

A person reviews accumulated cash and other eligible assets on a consistent date, records an allowed liability assumption, and checks Nisab and Hawl.

Important cautions

  • Do not describe gross salary as automatically Zakatable at a fixed rate.
  • Do not silently assume every future expense is deductible.

Differences of opinion

Methods can differ on the treatment of newly acquired money, annual review dates, and deductible debts.

When to consult a scholar

Consult a qualified scholar for personal circumstances, disputed asset treatment, complex ownership, inheritance, or uncertainty about the methodology you follow.
